Jazz in 2014 – is it relevent?

For a long time now some people have been telling us that jazz is no longer relevant and that live music is dying – another victim in the change of culture/economy etc.  However if you ask the question “what is jazz” then you will get as many different answers as people you ask.  Many people love some types of jazz, and hate others.  Since the term “jazz” covers a multitude of musical styles and it could actually be said in some ways, some aspects of jazz are becoming more popular, as shown by the widespread commercial success of Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum.  Even pop singers such as Robbie Williams and Bryan Ferry are getting in on the jazz act. My own impression from the local music scene in more recent times is that jazz is thriving and is definitely becoming less of a niche.

I have played many gigs over the last 19 years or so and certainly have seen a number of changes in the way the music business works. Agents are getting far less notice of bookings from their clients and are having to be ever more creative and flexible in their approach. Venues are becoming more circumspect (if that’s possible!) about who they book and are as always looking for a financial gain from having live music.

There is still opportunity though. and gigs are there if you have a good product and are prepared to work on unearthing them. There are some truly talented jazz musicians around in Scotland and I do think that more people are starting to appreciate them.

No doubt the last few years have been tough for many musicians and bands but  lets keep positive an savor the opportunity to perform when we can!
